Retrofitting mechanisms

It is common that after market mechanisms have a different screwhole pattern from the original and require retrofitting.

A popular method is to attach to the bottom of the chair seat a piece of 3/4" thick plywood using the existing original mounting holes and adding an inch or two to the wood length and width. (1" X 2" hardwood strips may also be used and longer screws or bolts may be required).

Usually, adding this small amount of wood thickness under the seat does not cause any problem.
However, the added wood thickness will cause the chair seat to not to go quite as low as it once did by the added wood thickness.

Attach the new mechanism to the wood using large head #14 round head wood screws 1" long (Style #6090S).
(See Mechanism Install and Pivot locating tips below for proper positioning) If the new mechanism position interferes with the mounting board screws, countersink or counter bore the screws. Do not install the new mechanism screws any closer than 1/2" to the mounting board screws.

Curved bottom seating:
If the bottom of the chair seat is curved preventing the mechanism from lying flat to the attachment holes, follow this procedure.
